There’s a lot of confusion in the marketplace about how much a music stream is worth. To say that it’s a complicated issue is an understatement.
It depends upon all of the following factors:

  • What type of service (interactive like Spotify, or non-interactive like Pandora)
  • Which tier (free or paid subscription)
  • Which territory it’s played in (they all pay different royalty rates)
  • Your marketshare (on Spotify you get paid more if you get played more)

As you can see, it’s impossible to say exactly what each stream is really worth, and the best we can do is get an average. Billboard has done just that with a great infographic that gives you an approximate worth of a stream coming from Spotify and Pandora.

APPLE IS SKILLED at attracting praise. Often, the tech giant deserves that praise. This is not one of those times.

On Sunday, high-ranking Apple exec Eddy Cue tweeted that the company would, in fact, pay royalties to musicians during the three-month free trial period of its new music platform Apple Music. This decision was a reversal of an earlier policy that became the center of controversy this weekend when megastar Taylor Swift wrote a blog post slamming Apple for its plan not to pay artists while Apple Music was in its trial phase. “It is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing,” Swift said, adding that she would be withholding her most recent album, 1989—that of “Shake It Off” fame—from Apple Music. LUMINEERS’ STELTH ULVANG BRINGS HIS OWN SONGS TO OHIO

Although the name Stelth Ulvang may not be familiar, his performance with celebrated Denver, Colorado-based folk rockers The Lumineers probably is. The band’s self-titled debut album, released in mid-2012 peaked at number two on the Billboard charts in early 2013 and has been certified platinum in the U.S. As a result, they were nominated for both Billboard Music Awards and Grammy Awards.
