The Keys of Life and Death, the debut album of Dayton metal band Horlet, is crunchy and tight from beginning to end. This cd has been in my player for a month now and shows no signs of getting stale! The heavy riffs SLAM, weaving lots of tandem melody lines and intricate percussion with great composition and production quality.

Review by Joel Naugle

This week’s show review is all about the 6 band, face melting metal show that went down at Mustang Sally’s in Moraine, OH on Saturday, September 7th.

Mustang Sally’s is a great venue with an excellent bar, serving your choice of a ton of domestic beer and great mixed drinks. The bartenders are also cool and will get you whatever you need. Smoking is allowed outside of the
building and they have fire pits to keep you warm on those cold winter nights. Inside, they have 2 dart boards and 2 pool tables to keep you entertained between sets or when you just need something to keep your hands busy.  As for the stage area, it’s a pretty good set up with plenty of room for people to sit or stand to see their favorite bands play. For the second month in a row, local metal band, Horlet, dropped in as one of our top 5 bands for our monthly featured contest!  I checked these guys out last month and was blown away by the level of talent in their music!  Falling into the metal/melodic metal/thrash genres, Horlet is brutal but technical, with crushing drums and a fantastic fusion of styles, you should definitely give these guys a listen if you are a fan of any metal genre!

These guys just release their first album, “The Keys of Life and Death” and had a great showing at the Rock the Farm 2013 event up in St. Paris, Ohio last weekend! They’ve also got several shows booked around the area for this fall, so you’ll get a chance to see them up close and personal and get a copy of the new album!

BIO:  Horlet hails from everywhere in Ohio, from the sticks to the city. We are comprised of a lot of different music styles from fast thrash metal, old school rock, and Scandinavian melodic death metal influences. Through hard work and dedication we have successfully achieved the type of metal that has been brewing in our hearts. With a very stellar E.P. released in late 2011(The Children Of The Light E.P.), to the much anticipated “The Keys Of Life And Death” full length album, we are fighting to make our mark in the very competitive metal community!
Horlet plans to stay, grow, and always keep pushing to touch the lives of every true metal head!!

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT HORLET:
“HORLET – The underground Metal scene is alive and rabid in Dayton, Ohio… and HORLET is one brutal reason why. Uniting the sounds of both old school Thrash and Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal, the influences of Slayer and (early) In Flames run rampant through the Metal sound of HORLET. If you’re a Metal band on the rise like HORLET is, these are the Metal legends you want to have rub off on your sonic Metal arsenal.” —  Stone, Metalodyssey.net

“Just had the chance today for a really good play through of the new disc guys! Awesome job!! Great tunes, musicianship all while keeping it brootal! Love the interlude stuff and Keith’s recordings continues to push towards the major-label stuff!!!”  – D. Moore

“Hey guys, just dropping by again to say great show on Saturday. And thanks for the CD and sticker and whatnot. \m/ I honestly really enjoy your guys material and cant wait to see where it takes you.”  – The Dark and Bleak

Chambers of Chaos has been rockin the Dayton Scene & has hooked up with an awesome new drummer, Kyle D. Mayes, who will be performing his debut show with CoC on the 22nd!

“Lighters & Moshpits alumni Chambers of Chaos emerged as the sunglass wearing, middle finger flailing, attitude adjusting, smirking Shaun Clark entered the proverbial staged ring as musical fists flew. Yelling the spoken word Hype train with plenty of pissed off attitude. They end slow, dark & melodic on the Kiss of Goodbye. CoC are not to be Pushed, played around with or pissed off in any way, shape or form. Why, because they said so.”     –  Mike Ritchie, Dayton Most Metro

We had a MASSIVE vote for the June featured Band/Artist and had quite the battle, but in the end, Gathering Mercury, remained on top and won the vote!

This vote reached over 46,000 people, had over 2,200 votes, over 230 Likes, and had over 230 shares!  It went so crazy, folks are still voting!!!  Four bands received more than 140 votes each (The Broken Lights, Horlet, Chambers of Chaos, Black Cloud Syndrome) and the top two bands each had over 500 votes (Curse of Cassandra and Gathering Mercury)!  We also had several bands reaching at least 50 votes (In The Cut, “Good English”, Gin-Soaked Angels).  For such tremendous voting effort, Music  Connection will be giving a shout out during June to all the bands receiving at least 50 votes, with special attention to our top 5!

The local support was phenomenal, which means Dayton’s music scene had a tremendous reach in the last week of May!  Music Connection is proud to be a part of that connection!  With that in mind, I’m proud to introduce the June Featured Band and tell you a few cool things about Gathering Mercury:

gatheringmercury

* They ROCK! Everything about this act is really stellar! If you like rock and haven’t been to one of their shows, you’re really missing it!

* They’re fronted by killer young female vocalist/songwriter, Ashley Stacy, who also plays guitar!
* Their drummer, John “JJ” Mangold, is a budding phenom on the drums providing some mind-blowing performances!
* Quique Bucio’s infectious energy and tasty bass licks are always one of my favorite parts of their shows!
* Their newest addition, Mark “The Ogre” Burris, on lead guitar has been an excellent match with the group’s talent level and overall style!
* They released their 1st album, Where The Others Go, in July 2012 to great reviews, and they are hitting the local scene and building a great following! Check it and get it here:

Music Connection will be supporting Gathering Mercury during the month of June with cover photo promotion, a review of their music, multiple “shout-outs” during the month about their upcoming activities, and tons of song plays!  I hope you’ll stop by and connect with them!
