The Dayton Underground Series continued last month by featuring six phenomenal local songwriters at Jimmie’s Ladder 11 in Dayton, and the night was dreamy from start to finish! The crowd was completely lured in by music from Raya, Kyleen Downes, Kevin Milner, Todd the Fox & Victoria Harper, Sharon Lane, and Jeremy & Lynne and The Typical Johnsons!
Maybe you think songwriters just sit around and sing folk songs by the light of a campfire, but we brought together a diverse group of writers who showed the crowd at Jimmie’s that songwriters can be fresh, pretty, political, soulful, funny, and even a bit rowdy from time to time!

It was spring of 2015, at Sideshow X, when I first heard the friendly, sweet voice of local singer-songwriter, Kyleen Downes, and now, coming up in July 2016, she’s preparing for the release of her highly-anticipated debut album, ‘Maybe Sometimes’!
Her voice floated above the crowds on that day and found its way into my brain like a cool breeze, and since that show, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her perform a number of times and watched her grow as a performer and artist!
REVIEW: Jam With a Dirty Twist| The New Outdoors – Dayton, OH

With so many talented bands out there, carving out a space in the jam arena can be a challenge these days. Just over a week ago though, I had the opportunity to play a show at Hank’s Pub with a sweet, new band called The New Outdoors, and these guys appear to be challenging the standard definition of jam a bit by mixing it with blues and a little twist of dirty, indie rock.
This trio has only been playing together for about six months, and I was initially surprised to see them take the stage with no bass (just drums and two guitars). They ripped out an hour-long original set of tasty jams though like it was nobody’s business, and Sean O’Brien even switched it up to play bass late in the set! Andrew Shough’s chill vocals were the cream and sugar to my coffee, especially while also playing guitar. His rich vocals are a standout and would lend themselves well to any number of acts. Ryan Magner is the centerpiece, holding them all together on the drums and driving each tune exactly where it needs to go. Together, the trio’s relaxed, smooth jams have a little funk and a little blues guitar making The New Outdoors easy to groove too! The oh-so-smooth guitar leads and fills take it up a few notches, and there’s a killer dirty, grungy, and almost psychedelic sound to their tunes that take it to the interesting and intriguing and “I want more” level! These cats are hitting the Dayton scene right now, and YOU should make it a point to catch an upcoming show, or two or three!

Dark Electronic Rock Hits Dayton!
Posted: June 7, 2013 by Kimberly Weiss in Band Reviews/Promotions, Music Connection NewsTags: Curse of Cassandra, Dance, Electronic Rock, Electronica, female-fronted, Indie Dance, Jimmie's Ladder 11, Nine Inch Nails, Portishead, Radiohead
Dayton’s got a hot new band on the scene! Check out Curse of Cassandra!
They just formed earlier this year, but their dark, ambient, electronic rock took Music Connection’s June Featured Band/Artist contest by STORM, garnering over 500 votes before the end! Ending up in 2nd place, they gave our June winner, Gathering Mercury, a solid run for their money and tromped all the other competition!
I sat down and checked out their page this afternoon and found some great things waiting for me! Their song, “The One I Need”, is exactly as advertised. It’s a dark, passionate song with strong dance beats and haunting vocals that you should definitely check out! They’ve also got some sweet photos and some great shows coming up this month in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus! Check them out on June 21st at Jimmie’s Ladder 11 in Dayton! I can’t wait to see and hear more from this project!
