RepAvatrNow that you have your music, what do you want to do with it? Probably sell it, perform it live, and of course, make a little bit of money. There are many ways you can accomplish these goals. These include selling your music in a store or online, licensing your music, and using a sponsor. When you decide to sell, license, or use a sponsor, the arrangement should be represented by a written agreement to protect you and your music. Here are some things to consider with each type of agreement:

RepAvatrDisputes among band members are not new, and when they happen, they can be ugly.  Recently, STP (Stone Temple Pilots) sued former singer Scott Weiland, who then counter-sued STP for various issues involving their written band agreement.  The good news is they had an agreement to fall back on.  The bad news, of course, is that regardless of the agreement, emotions on both sides are high and this particular dispute may take years of court battles to resolve.

guitarIf you’re involved in the entertainment world as an artist, musician, or other entertainer, you probably want to make it more than a hobby, perhaps even a career.  If you want to be successful in the entertainment world, you need to treat your craft as a business, and that includes having some knowledge of the legal issues that come up.  If you don’t have this basic knowledge, you could be taken advantage of by someone who does, and wind up losing everything you’ve worked hard for.

A little over a week ago, I had the privilege of meeting with Dawn Montgomery of local Dayton company, Razdabar Sound & Management, to talk about their efforts in connecting the local scene!   I’d been seeing postings in local Facebook groups about their networking meetings in north Dayton that made me curious, but I had also heard that these meetings mostly involved the specific genres of rap, hip-hop, and R&B.  However, when I met with local music & entertainment attorney, Melissa Replogle, in late April, she had mentioned that Razdabar was looking to expand their meetings to include as many genres as possible, so I got a hold of Dawn and we met at the Razdabar studio here in Dayton for a tour and a chat!
