Square Roots RecordsSquare Roots Records opened its doors for the first time on Saturday, June 13 in Troy, OH! The maiden voyage of the Miami Valley’s newest music venue launched with a special inaugural concert and CD fundraiser for Scott Lee & The Whiskey River Boys, which also featured local favorites, Lost on Iddings!

A few weeks prior to the opening, my wife, Lisa, and I made a visit to see the proud owner, Brad Denson, at his cool, new venue, and Denson was kind enough to give Music Connection Dayton a sneak peek at the new 5300 sq. ft. facility!    His enthusiasm for the project was infectious, and during the tour, Denson shared his vision for the multi-purpose venue, where music is the emphasis and not just a sideline to a cool social gathering!

From the opening notes of “Rainin’ Sunshine” right through to the end of “The Experience”, singer-songwriter Will Cook’s new solo album, “The Weatherman”, warms the soul and calms the storms of the mind.

The album is full of clear, bright melodies of acoustic guitar fronted by Will’s rich and soulful vocal stylings.  His lyrics are chock full of hope and love, and they ring true in a world too often filled with hate. It’s not all sunshine and roses, though.  “The Weatherman” brings us the rainy days, too, but with a cleansing, healing, and reflective look that keeps things in perspective and always aims to look on the bright side. Go get this album and soak it up if you’re need of some serene and feel-good jams! (more…)

featured banner mar-14 copyThe focus over here at Music Connection Dayton has moved away from featuring one, vote-selected band/artist each month and towards featuring specific genres.  For the rest of 2014, I’ll be featuring a new genre(s) each month and several area artists who I think deserve your attention.   This month, I’m featuring local Singer-Songwriters, and I’ll be releasing spotlights this week on three very talented individuals:   Jayne Sachs, Paige Beller, and Will Cook!

Singer-Songwriters are the Life Blood of the Scene.   From the bards of olden days and rings of musicians around a campfire to raw and soul-baring performances in a dimly lit bar, singer-songwriters have long been the standard-bearers for storytelling and truth in music, and nowhere is this truer than in and around Dayton, OH.   This area is filled with amazing singer-songwriters, each telling a unique story about our history and their history, sharing life experiences, and looking to connect the past and the future with the here and now.  (more…)

Blue Moon SoupToday’s all about Blue Moon Soup, an acoustic folk/bluegrass quartet from Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Yellow Springs is well known for producing some amazing musical experiences, and Blue Moon Soup is no exception! Here’s some info so you can get to know them a little better:

Members:  Jon Bauman (Standup Bass, Vocals) | Robbie Marion (Fiddle, Vocals) | Brendan Moore (Mando, Vocals) | Justin Moon (Guitar, Vocals)

Biography:

Blue Moon Soup, the acoustic folk quartet from Yellow Springs, Ohio, entrances audiences with an eclectic mix of jam band staples, folk and bluegrass traditionals, and originals tunes that fuse folk and psychedelia to establish a unique identity in an increasingly homogenized musical landscape. As evidenced by the presence of a fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and upright bass, Blue Moon Soup’s bluegrass and celtic folk roots run deep. On stage, trailside or fireside, Blue Moon Soup’s music brings a sincerity and spirit to the stage that sweeps wallflowers onto the dance floor, and an enthusiasm that engages the audience into the wee hours. After a Blue Moon Soup show, we hope your feet are tired and your ears yearn for more. From dive bars to concert halls, Blue Moon Soup quickly attracted a fervent core group of fans throughout the broader Dayton area, and went on to augment its burgeoning following by appearing at a variety of regional musical festivals in Ohio and toured throughout the region, making inroads into Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.

Lonely Mountain, Blue Moon Soup’s first LP, was released on Christmas Eve 2011 to broad acclaim. Although the band’s current primary focus is to broaden its reach in Ohio metro areas, they are crafting a second LP for a third quarter 2013 release, and continuing to reach out to new fans; young and old, near and far.

Description:

“The largest biological experiment man has ever entered into.”
Jerry Garcia

Band Interests:

Blue Moon Soup continues to be involved in a variety of charitable works, because as Jerry Garcia said, “Somebody has to do something, and it’s just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.”

Influences:
Jerry Garcia, David Grissman, Old and in the Way, Grateful Dead, Ortega Fuerte, Yonder Mountain String Band, Great Lake Swimmers, Fleet Foxes, Neil Young, Luke Campbell Brennan

So I’ve spent the morning and early part of this lovely day checking out music from our Featured Artist, Dakota Wright, and let me tell you, this young gentleman is a big part of why I decided to do this page!
Dakota is one of our young and uber-talented local musicians from Yellow Springs and totally deserves your support! He has a unique style all his own that he calls “symphonic folk”, and I can’t think of a more apt description of his personal style! Take a few minutes to check out his videos, and I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that this is one crazy talented cat!
Dakota plays guitar, violin, and bass, and he sings with a gentle smooth tone that is sure to please your ears! It would not surprise me one bit if I found out that he plays several other instruments as well, and it definitely didn’t surprise me to find that he has several different musical projects going on! Check out the links below for more info on Dakota, and check him out at an upcoming show!
